In about 563 b.c. a young Indian aristocrat by the name of Siddhartha Gautama grew disillusioned with his privileged existence, renounced his earthly goods and retreated into the life of a wandering ascetic. Seeking spiritual fulfillment, he traveled India exploring and practicing different religions for six years till he eventually found fault with them all. His wanderings continued till one day while meditating in the shade of a bodhi tree he is believed to have “attained enlightenment”.
