Btrayal

In the text ‘Maestro’, Goldsworthy explores the theme of betrayal through Paul in his adolescence in Darwin. During Paul’s time in Darwin he manages to betray nearly everyone he meets and comes close to. As a part of Paul’s growth he needs to betray his friends for others to move on into adulthood and become wiser. We see this in action when he ignores Bennie Reid for the ‘Rough Stuff’ crew. Paul also manages to betray the ones he loves and care for such as Keller, Rosie and himself, Paul uses betrayal as a step forward and demonstrates how far he will go far his friends and who he cares about more when it cares down to deciding.

We first see betrayal in the text when Paul moves on from his nerdish friend Bennie Reid, who is the school loser to the cool, school buddies of the ‘Rough Stuff’ crew.
