Breast feeding and Healthy development

Breast Feeding in terms of healthy and non-healthy development.

It is a common fact that breast-feeding is the best way to start off a baby’s life and the effects of doing it (or not) are said to be huge.
“That breast-feeding is the best start in life for infants is now established beyond doubt.” (World Health Organisation)
Milk is produced in the lobes of the breasts and is then passed through tubes and ducts towards the nipple. When baby cries, the breasts grow hot and the milk glands are stimulated. The milk is full of protein, nutrients and calories that satisfy the baby’s hunger and quench it’s thirst.
The first milk produced by the mother is made during pregnancy. It is called Colostrum and has high levels of antibodies but is low in fat and sugar. “It is uniquely designed to feed the new-born baby” (Bruce and Meggitt 1999 pg 92)
The National Childbirth Trust also stresses the importance of the first feeds.
