In the September 24, 2003 Toronto Star article, titled N.B woman dies of brain-wasting disease. A patient of unknown identity underwent brain patching surgery made from tissues taken from cadavers, was presented with an illness known as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), which the patient unfortunately died from. Officials stated, ¡§¡KThe illness was not connected to the variant form of the disease, which has been linked to bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or so called mad cow disease.¡¨ It was noted by officials that it was possible for the patient to be infected during brain surgery in 1992, but autopsy was inconclusive. Now doctors along with Health Canada have compiled stats ensuring that the disease is very rare in Canada, as well, reinforced that the transmission of the disease through medical procedure is less than one per of all the case of classic CJD.
