A Quest for Peace: Israel and U.S. Relations
Since Israel's Independence Day on May 14, 1948, Israel has been the target of numerous attacks by Arab countries. Israel, the Jewish State in Palestine, was born on this date as the British finally left the country and Independence Day was officially declared. Israel's Declaration of Independence enunciated the new state's commitment to the principles of freedom and equality (Bard 165). For humanitarian reasons and personal advantages, The United States has shown great interest and increasing amount of foreign aid for Israel. This support, estimated in the excess of three billion dollars worth of military and financial aid per year, in itself, has been a controversial issue. Israel as well as the entire Middle East is America's strongest source for oil. As the United States provides aid to Israel, in exchange, Israel can provide a steady flow of Middle Eastern oil.
