Boss Tweed

William Marcy “Boss” Tweed was born on April 3, 1823. He was born in New York City, New York. He attended public school and had many jobs. These jobs included a chair maker, a bookkeeper, and a volunteer firefighter. He was also a member of his father’s firm. He became an alderman in 1851 in New York City. Tweed was elected into the House of Representatives in 1852. He was in Congress from 1853 to 1855. In 1857, he became a power in the Tammany Society.
