Chapter One: The Men-of-the-Lake

The kingdom of Sacramento was in chaos. The peasants were revolting, demanding rights and wearing their purple cloaks every Wednesday while they paraded up and down the streets before the Palace, shouting and waving dead chickens on poles at the King and his counselors whenever they dared to glance out any of the windows. Dark lords from the Land of Oil had stolen two of the royal dragons and flown them into the Palace of King Davis’ close friend, King Giuliani of New York. The magic that had been lighting and warming the homes of the people of Sacramento was running out.
King Davis paced the well-worn wooden floor of his study, chewing his lip and muttering to himself.
