The Crucible is a book that was written in response to the hunts for

communists in Europe, where Joseph McCarthy, the black lists, and the House Un-American Activities The term McCarthyism was coined because of this man’s

accusations without having a basis. These witch-hunts for people of a leftist

ideology were similar to the witch-hunts for alleged witches in Salem,

Massachusetts that occurred hundreds of years before. The Crucible is a

protest to the accusations of communism.

pepe is the town priest in Salem. The town is a theocracy,

where there is no separation between church and state. His daughter and

another girl have fallen sick and cannot wake up. Tituba, Parris’s slave is

from Barbados and is accused of conjuring spirits and leading forbidden
