Bloody Sunday

The march occurred in Derry on 30th January 1972, and was illegal as the Stormont Parliament banned all The march was by the Catholic Nationalists who were demonstrating for Catholic rights and protesting against internment. Internment was where the police could arrest anyone who they suspected were involved in the IRA without trial. This angered many Catholics, as many that were arrested were not involved with the IRA.. Some eyewitnesses said the number was around 20, 000 however the Widgery report says it was between 3000-5000. The eyewitnesses think this because they were at the march so therefore think this. It could be seen as valid as the eyewitnesses had attended the march. However one could argue that this source is unreliable as the eyewitnesses are biased as they are Catholics and want to play up the numbers to show that there is strong opposition by the Nationalists against the Stormont government, that brought about internment.
