What are death and time to the blind?

In this section of the book the reader is introduced to new dilemmas which the blind have to face within their confinement. The most prominent one is the fact that the food that they are promised rarely arrives. Everyday the quarantined people hear an announcement of rules and procedures to follow within their contained space. One of the things mentioned is that food will be delivered to everyone, everyday, three times a day. At first this message seems to be reassuring, even though it's a little hostile, the promise of food seems to assure some safety. As time passes, and more and more internees appear, food becomes more and more scarce. This slowly causes panic and rancorous behavior. It's not easy to keep calm when one is threatened by starvation.
