One that stands out throughout the play is Blanche Dubois. Blanche lives with a disturbing past of lost love, dying fortunes and feelings of failure. Blanche is depressed because of these past experiences that have affected her mental state. Blanche shows her depression through physical and mental symptoms. These symptoms are consistent with Bipolar I, Psychotic and neurosis. Blanche’s past is the main reason for her depression. She does not let this past be known and creates many illusions to hide it, her actions and comments reflect this. Blanche seems to hold on to her past and her beliefs with a tight grip. Blanche is in a deep state of depression. There are many forms of depression. A definition given by Wendy Moragne “is a cluster of signs and symptoms that affects a persons everyday functioning and lasts a long time” (12). These signs and symptoms vary from person to person.
