Matusow’s purpose “Black Power” is to convey the history of black protest in the 1960’s and how it evolved out of the civil rights movement. There were many interpretations followed by the Black Panther Party. Matusow begins by telling the story of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). This story is one of the many that fall behind the movement of Black power in which Matusow puts emphasis on throughout his dissertation.
