Summary
refused to pay for 's public school textbooks because she considered them "worldly." Within two weeks, Richard was promoted from the fifth to the sixth grade. Because of Granny's ban against working on Saturdays, he was unable to get a job or participate in the social life of his classmates. He hid his poverty and hunger from them, all the while yearning for independence.
A classmate suggested that he sell a newspaper printed in Chicago. The classmate never read the paper, but he liked the stories in the magazine supplement. Richard ordered a batch of the papers and was likewise entranced by the supplement. Finally a family friend pulled Richard aside to show him that the paper, which Richard had never read, actually espoused KKK ideology. Richard was shocked that a Chicago paper could be so racist. When the father of his classmate discovered the racist propaganda of the paper, he forbade the boy to sell them. Out of mutual shame, Richard and his class...
