VOCABULARY


The experience of most language teachers is that the single, biggest component of any language course is vocabulary. Without words to express a wide range of meanings, communication in a second language cannot happen in any way. And it is also important to say that the vocabulary of a language like English consists of several hundred thousand words.
In recent years, vocabulary did not receive the recognition it deserves in the classroom, because a great amount of teaching time is consumed by explanations and definitions, classroom blackboards are often filled with masses of new lexical items, and students compile page upon page of vocabulary word-lists that they rarely have the opportunity to practise. Perhaps, the problem is that vocabulary seems to be taught in classroom with no regard to chosen activities. That is why we have to select it carefully and ensure that high priority items are included.
