Biography of Evangelista Torricelli

In the story The Witch of Blackbird Pond many events involving witchcraft took
place in the seventeenth century when witches and their acts were not tolerated. Puritans
believed that witches were sent by the devil and caused others harm. In the story a
women named Kit took a ship called the Dolphin over to America. She was destined for
Wethersfield where she was going to live with her aunt. While she was on the boat, she
was thought to be a witch because of her great swimming ability. They noticed she could
swim real well when she jumped off the boat and into the water to save a child’s toy.
Witches are able to float on water, so that’s why they thought she could swim so well.
Later in the story Kit’s cousin Mercy wanted her to help teach children reading
and writing. Kit enjoyed teaching the children religious stories and the Bible. When Kit
allowed the children to act out a verse in the Bible the school got shut down. Kit was
very upset about the school...
