Billy Elliot

Describe the ending and explain why it was effective.


“Just cause I’m a dancer, it doesn’t mean I’m a poof”. In his film ‘Billy Elliot’, Stephen Daldry uses a various amount of film techniques to increase the effectiveness of the ending of this film. He makes good use of camera shots and angles, great style of music and good use of lighting. In Billy’s hometown a male ballet dancer is classed as a ’poof’ but the ending shows that Billy has proved that dancing is not just for girls and that you should follow your dreams.

The miners have been on a strike to gain higher wages, which they did not win, thus the chance of the situation in Billy’s hometown improving is lost. The director’s purpose of the low-key lighting to the miners is to emphasise the sadness of the situation, where as the silhouetted Mrs Wilkinson standing in the boxing hall with light shining ...
