The consolidation of the media, resulting in information being distributed by fewer and fewer sources is an issue of global significance that has fundamentally impacted the way I think and behave. Over the past few decades, the companies that finance the mass media around the world have become fewer and fewer, and larger and larger. The merger between AOL and Time Warner is only the most visible of a series of similar buyouts, takeovers and mergers. The nightly news is now owned by three huge corporations who all hold similar interests, the radio waves are now controlled by conglomerates ensuring for a bland uniformity across the entire nation and the daily newspapers of almost all major cities are controlled by companies that overlap from city to city.
