Exegesis on Job 1, 11-19
The first chapter of Job is basically setting up this sort of controversy between Satan and God. God asks if Satan has considered his servant, Job. Job is described as the greatest man in the East. He is very blessed, having seven sons, three daughter, as well as a plentiful supply of oxen, donkeys, camels, and sheep, so it is easy to see why Job would be considered so great. Satan challenges Job’s character by saying “Does Job fear God for nothing? Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has?”(Job 1:9-10). “But stretch your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face,”(Job 1:11). In saying this, Satan assumes that if Job had everything taken away from him, he would not have faith in God.
