Beowulf

“The Fellowship of the Rings”
A complete circle, or a ring is a metaphor for life. The dichotomy of good vs. evil in Beowulf is expressed in relationship to these rings. The complete ring is a symbol of unity, and tranquility. There are many aspects too the ring. It is not merely a shape; the ring takes a myriad of forms. Yet the essence of the ring remains the same. It is a marking of balance. The continuity of the circle forms equilibrium between good and evil.
The ancient Chinese symbol of Yin and Yang depicts the balance between good and evil that forms the ring. The circle is divided equally between the dark and light portions; dark represents evil, whereas light represents goodness. The principle states that good cannot function without evil, and the evil cannot function without good. When the good and evil are distributed equally in this manner, a perfect balance is created.
