i've already expressed my doubts about de beauvoir further up, but her book 'the second sex' was the first encyclopedic examination of what it means to be a woman in a post-enlightenment western society. her main argument - that men are allowed to be who they are, but women are expected to conform to society's expectation of them - was radical and shocking when it first appeared (just after WWII).
