Battle at Lexington and Concord

The brief skirmish took place last month last month April 19, between some 70 colonial minutemen commanded by Captain John Parker, and about 700 British soldiers marching towards Concord, Massachusetts, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Francis Smith. American patriots Paul Revere, William Dawes, and Samuel Prescott warned the colonial militia, or minutemen of the British approach, which gave the minutemen a definite advantage. The colonial militia assembled to halt the British force.
Inspired by the words of Captain Parker, “Stand your ground; don't fire unless fired upon, but if they mean to have a war, let it begin here,” the Americans refused to scatter when ordered to do so by the commander of the British units. Gunfire was exchanged and after the short-lived action, eight Americans lay dead and 10 were wounded before the minutemen retreated. Only one British soldier was wounded in the battle.
