Ex-Ball State Student Sues Over Goal Posts

(Indianapolis, IN) -- A former Ball State University student from Liberty, Indiana who was paralyzed when a football goal post fell on him two years ago is suing the post's manufacturer. Andrew Bourne's attorney filed the lawsuit against Connecticut-based Gilman Gear in federal court in Indianapolis. The 23-year-old Bourne was hurt after Ball State beat Toledo on Homecoming day in October 2001. Thousands rushed onto the Muncie football field, climbed both goal posts and tore them down. One of the posts landed on Bourne and crushed his legs. Gilman Gear supplies goal posts to many college football stadiums and the NFL. Ball State University stopped buying material from Gilman Gear after the accident and later installed what athletics officials call "crowd-proof" goal posts. Bourne is reportedly close to settling an insurance claim with the university over the incident.
