Basketball

When Dr. James Naismith nailed up two peach
baskets on a YMCA balcony in January 1892, little did he
know that basketball would become a national sport.
Although, the peach baskets, the soccer ball and the
nine-player teams used for the first day did not survive.
The original height of the baskets, 10 feet, and several
other rules did survive.
The United States accepted basketball almost
immediately. The U.S. universities adopted the game as a
competitive sport in 1895. The first professional league
was formed in 1898. As a demonstration sport, basketball
appeared in the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis. It wasn’t
until 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin that basketball arrived
as a medal sport with twenty-three nations sending teams
