Bartok Quartet No. 5

The overall structure of Bartok’s Quartet No. 5 is an arch form. The first, third, and fifth movements are fast, while the second and fourth are slow. The first movement can either be seen as a Sonata form or Rondo (see attached sheet). If perceived as a Rondo, it connects to the last movement, which is also in Rondo form. Another similarity is that the last movement uses the opening theme from movement 1 in measure 367 (see excerpt).
The second and fourth movements are both arch forms within themselves, giving them similarity. Bartok also uses his themes from movement two and embellishes them in movement four. The first theme (W) in the second ...
