In “Bartleby, the Scrivener” by Herman Melville, Bartleby would be described as a very annoying person by everyone who have had contact with him. At his work he would simply reply that he “would prefer not to” answer when the lawyer questioned about his past. As the story goes on, the phrase “I would prefer not to” becomes his repeated answer regardless of what the lawyer demanded from him. Bartleby’s weird actions not only influenced his co-workers but also his boss in various. For instance, professional friends who come to the office find the arrangement bizarre. The narrator worried that his reputation is being damaged by the bizarre man who stays at his office. Bartleby came to haunt the lawyer.
