The title "Joe turner's Come & Gone symbolizes the American socialized system of oppression. Joe Turner is "the Man", Joe Turner is jail, and oppression. In this play, upon his release he searches to find his daughter and his wife while all along he has been searching for his inner self. "Root worker", one who practices unconventional spiritual worship?

Joe turner’s Come and Gone, takes place in the early twentieth century in a Pittsburgh boarding house. Seth Holly and his wife, Bertha owns the house and takes in tenants on a regular basis. As the story develops, the Hollys rent a room to Harold Loomis and his daughter Zonia who have been searching for Harold’s wife for four years, who is searching for her husband
