Awakening

2.In “The Awakening” by Kate Chopin the main character, Edna Pontellier, after being married for many years, discovers her desires and passions for a man other than her husband. She realizes that her individuality is as important as her husband’s and is willing to break all the rules. She is dissatisfied with her indifferent husband and desires other men like Arobin and Robert and commits adultery. She not only explores herself interest sexually, but also artistically through her drawings. Edna’s determinism to learn how to swim shows that the sea holds Edna's soul where it allows Edna to break free from the society that encases her. Edna is a victim of her own world, although she lives a pleasant and pampered married life. After her awakening she decides to carry on with her life careless of the consequences because her indivualism and identity are more important to her.
