Athenian Women

Throughout history, women have had fewer rights and a lower social status than men have. From culture to culture, women have tried to change this standard of living for themselves. The role of wife and mother dominated the life of the women. The Athenian women are a group who had to endure this standard at its harshest existence. The life of the Athenian women was structured so much by the men in her life that she had no life of her own. The Athenian woman lost and gained rights in her struggle for equality. She lived how her father or husband might have wanted her to. Her daily life, family life, and education were all determined by what men believed she should do, know, or see.
The daily life of Athenian women was different depending on the social class that she fits into. The lowest of the social classes for women in Athenian society was the female slave.
