As Good As It Gets

“Maybe this is as good as it gets.” Melvin Udall says to waiting clients in a psychiatric office. Melvin was referring to the fact, that maybe there is no cure for a psychological disorder and who you are now, and there is nothing you can do to change. “As Good as it Gets” follows Melvin Udall an obsessive-compulsive man, a recluse and successful author. Melvin is depicted as a coarse man, he is homophobic, racist, and tends to dislike small dogs. While following Melvin you are introduced to Carol, a waitress in a downtown Manhattan restaurant. Melvin is a frequent customer who forms an attachment to Carol. Suddenly, something happens to change Melvin’s life. Melvin’s gay neighbor Simon is viciously beaten by a group of robbers. Melvin is then forced to take a dog into his home where until then, no one other than himself, entered. By this small act of kindness Melvin begins to explore new ways of helping others.
