As Fate would Have It

As Faith would have it Young Goodman Brown met face to face with the devil. For some odd reason he was drawn near to what seemed to be hell. Goodman Brown's ordinary and normal life dramatically changed one dark and lonely night in the shadows of the forest. Nathaniel Hawthorne uses the method of foreshadowing to draw the reader into the suspenseful story.
Hawthorne uses the word faith in the story, both as Brown's wife's name and as the literal meaning of the word faith. When Faith is introduced Hawthorne basically tells the reader her name "Faith" is foreshadowing, "And Faith as the wife aptly named…" This implies that faith is involved in the story and "Faith" will have an influence on Goodman Brown's faith. Faith goes on to explain, "Pray, tarry with this night dear husband, of all nights of the year!" She is trying to impede him from advancing on with his journey. It's almost comical how Hawthorne drives the point ...
