As an actor what important considerations would you wish to bring to bear in realising the role of Seamus in Shadow of a Gunman

If an actor is to play the part of Seamus in Shadow of a Gunman there are many important points they should consider while preparing for the role. O’Casey gives many stage directions throughout the play, he not only describes the set but also exactly what the characters should look like and do, in this way he can manipulate what the audience thinks of the characters. This manipulation is only possible if the characters are as they are supposed to be.
Seamus is a “heavily built man” and must contrast with Davoren in every way. The person playing Seamus would need to be slightly overweight; this would make the incident when his braces snap far more comical. This big ‘primitive man’ image carries through to his personality; despite being quite a clever man he has a very basic view of the world. This view is a highly cynical one, he is greatly hypocritical in his opinion of the Irish people:
