Articles of Confederation

The Articles of Confederation was the first national constitution created by John Dickinson. The Articles of Confederation’s purpose was to give specific rights to the national government of America. It allowed each state to contain sovereignty, freedom, and independence. Most of the powers that the government contained was based on diplomacy and defense. It allowed the government to declare war and peace, make treaties with foreign nations, adjusticate dispute between the states, borrow and print money, and requisition funds from the states ‘for the common defense or general welfare.’ Although the American colonists created the Articles of Confederation to grant powers to the government, it became a failure with little success. It was an effective form of government to Foreign Relations, Economic Conditions, and Western Lands.
