Are dress codes in grade school a good idea?

As a recent graduate I hated dress codes. Each student has a right to dress as they please. The way people dress expresses their personality. I understand that certain things just aren't suppose to be worn on the school grounds, but there are certain limits that the school boards have exceeded.
