Are Free Tests Valid?

Have you or someone you know ever taken a free Internet personality test? If so have you wondered if it is a valid measurement of your true personality? Many websites now offer personality test. Are these free Internet tests valid?

Most Internet personality tests are self-report inventories. A self-report inventory is basically an interview on paper. Instead of a doctor reading a series of questions to the patient and recording their answers. The person reads the questions and reports their answers on paper themselves. They then have their answers graded. The fist self-report inventory was used during World War I. It was developed to screen draftees before service. Woodsworth and Poffenberger were researching emotional health for warfare already. Consequently they pioneered the first self-report inventory for the Army (Kleinmuntz, 1967).
