Antigone

“Love: Sophocle’s Antigone”



One can consider the theme of the play Antigone to be about love. Antigone’s love for her brother caused her to give up her own life. If the theme of Antigone is about love, than one can consider the turning point of the play is when Antigone is walking toward her death cave with the chorus singing by her side and the long final speech.
The scene begins with the chorus singing about love and it begins in line 879 through 899. When the chorus sing this song about love while Antigone is being brought in from the palace, the turning point of the play begins. These lines reinforce the theme of the play. It goes on to explain that love appears in many forms and sizes. The chorus make it clear that love is powerful. In line 886, the chorus sing, “...whoever feels your grip is driven mad.” The chorus is sympathizing with Antigone’s love for her brother. Her love for her brother has driven her into her own death.
