Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa

In a society which believes that a picture is worth a thousand words it is not surprising that a preoccupation with image has led to the establishment of eating disorders as a serious and rapidly increasing problem. At a very young age people, especially women, are bombarded with the message that in order to lead a successful and rewarding life they must fit the “cookie cutter” image society sets forth. The quest for this ideal image has become so powerful that many people will do almost anything to attain it. As a result of this, eating disorders afflict millions of people, thousands of which will die from them yearly. Two of the most common eating disorders are Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa. These two disorders involve a dangerous fixation with food and weight loss, both of which can be attributed to far more serious underlying problems in that person's life.
