The author of this book Frank McCourt, informed his readers in great detail what growing up in Ireland in the forties and fifties was like. He was originally born in America, but his father moved them to Limerick when the family fell on some tough times of his father not being able to find work. He explained that he was raised in the back lanes of Limerick. He and his family was poverty stricken due to his father’s alcoholism. He explained how he suffered the loss of his twin brothers, Oliver and Eugene, and his sister, Margaret. Frank McCourt is a great storyteller and told his own life story well. This book shows that he overcomes his family problems and becomes a better person because of it. He starts the book out when he is five years old and continues until he is seventeen. The way he laid out the book makes it easy to understand because he does not skip any of his childhood years.
