Eric Arthur Blair, who took the pen name George Orwell, was born in India in 1903. His parents were members of the Indian Civil Service which put them in the lower half of the middle class. After receiving an education at Eaton College in England he joined the Indian Imperial Police in Burma in 1922. Following five years of service he left the police and began living in self imposed poverty for several years. He used these experiences to write several books detailing the lives of the poor in England. He fought for the Loyalists in the Spanish Civil War and when the threat of communism arose he fought against its spread. This caused him to have to flee for his life. On Jan. 21st, 1950 Orwell died in London, England.
