Analysis The Old Man and Sea

In The Old Man and Sea by Earnest Hemingway, a man named Santiago plays the main character. In this book and as seen in another book by Hemingway, The Sun Also Rises, (name the book) the story is told in first person. Hemingway likes to demonstrate the theme of pride and honor.
“You did not kill the fish only to keep alive and to sell for food, he thought. You killed him for pride and because you are a fisherman. You loved him when he was alive and you loved him after. If you love him, it is not a sin to kill him. Or is it more?”
Throughout Santiago's little voyage out on sea with the "great fish," Santiago knows he mustn't give up and is unwilling to give up but at the same time he feels that no one deserves to catch this "great fish" and eat him.
