Analysis of Group III/IV Cations Analysis of Group III/IV Cations Experiment 19 Sharon Gaines Sect. 16 TA: Carolyn Simmons Nov 6, 2003 Purpose: The purpose of this experiment was to identify several cations from Group III and IV. A variety of complex formations and flame tests were used to identify these cations as carbonates or sulfides. Procedure: Group III • 6M HCl was added to the known Group III and IV solution which contained Fe2+, Fe3+, Mn2+, Ba2+, and Sr2+. 6M NH3 was then added until the solution proved to be basic. An additional amount of 6M NH3 was then added and stirred thoroughly. • 1M thioacetamide solution was then added and heated for 10 minutes. The solution was then centrifuged for 2 minutes.
