The following elements of style should be examined when analyzing prose or poetry passages for the A.P. Exam.
DICTION - word choice

Sounds- "hard" or "soft," hissy or explosive, vowels vs. consonants
Word length- level of sophistication of speaker, may reflect audience
Invented words- iron curtain, granfalloon, wrongthink, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Compound words- belly-bedded, fat-rutted, swan road
Dialect-Twain and Dickens
Use of language to shock- Catcher in the Rye, Chaucer, Dante
