“My Last Duchess”

1 The Duke of Ferrera is meeting with the representative of the Count. They are negotiating the marriage of the duke and the count’s duchess.

2 Look! That is my last Duchess painted on the wall, looking as if she was alive. I call this piece a wonder.

3 Lord Duke, it is a marvelous painting, wonderful.

2 Yes, it is. Looking as if she was alive. It was from the hands of Fra Pandolf. He worked day and night and look, there she stands.

3 Lord Duke, may we get on with the negotiation? I haven’t much time.

2 Please, sit and look at her. Please! Let me tell you about my last Duchess.

4 Sir, if it is not long, I will stay. Tell me the story of your late Duchess.

1 So, the representative sat and listened to the tale of the Duke’s late Duchess and this is the story of what had happened to her.
