History, as it is lived, does not divide itself neatly into periods; yet, with the advantage of retrospect, we can often classify people, events, and works of art according to certain shared characteristics. Strong differences in the religious, philosophic, economic, and social beliefs experiences uniquely shaped the content and character of the Colonial and Romantic literary genres.
