American Dream Essay

The American Dream

A gun changed the way two men from different social classes and different parts of the country perceived the world. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and in Mice and Men by John Steinbeck two men had very different, yet similar, dreams. This dream was the American dream, a dream they so desperately wanted to grasp and get a hold of but was always just over the next hill or just a little bit further out into the mist. Both Jay Gatsby and Candy were not able to achieve their American Dream because, Jay was too obsessed with getting his long lost love Daisy back, and Candy wasn’t able to work because of unforeseen events that lay ahead in his life.
For example Jay did not achieve his American Dream because he did everything for Daisy. Jay made his money bootlegging alcohol in hopes that Daisy would hear about how rich he was and be attracted to his immense amount of wealth.
