“Inside the peach there is a stone” Using this as a Metaphor- discuss Atwood’s portrayal of Grace Marks.

As with many Canadian writers, Margaret Atwood (through the portrayal of grace marks- a convicted murderess) questions cultural myths and constraints from society. The story of the life of a ‘celebrated murderess’ captivated the imaginations of 19th century Canada, and clearly also left Atwood spellbound enough to try and rebuild the story once again. Although we are often persuaded to forget, the novel is fiction but this is also the story’s whole basis. fascination in the tale stems from the impossibility of tracking down the truth. The shocking point that, as human beings, we depend completely on the past and historical records. we are shown through the portrayal of grace marks by Atwood that this dependence is dangerous, and are able to see elaborate and often fictionalised accounts, posing as historical fact.
