The United States and several other countries, including Afghanistan, are now at war with al Qaeda and other groups who support them. They are presently fighting in the province of Paktia with its capital at Gardez. The recent events relating to Afghanistan also relate to the five themes of geography - location, place, human environment interaction, movement, and region.
