Al Ghazzali: A Liberal Education
A liberal arts education seeks to open one’s mind to the true meaning of life itself and encourages one to contemplate the truth and understanding of human realities, which is what Al-Ghazzali set out to do after years of being an educator of religious sciences. Having a hunger for knowledge was part of his nature from an early age and as he continued his studies it became evident to him that his faith, which is having confidence in justifying a belief without actually having proof, in knowledge was being challenged and he must prove to himself that what he believed to be true undoubtedly was. Just as a liberal education aims at making one go beyond what they are familiar with and search for other ways of doing things by leading one out of ignorance, Al-Ghazzali, too, was trying to reason, or justify his beliefs, by continuing to question his so called answers to what he thought to be true.
