After the first death

The concept of the individual and authority are explored through the novel ‘After the first death’ through a number of different situations involving power, corruption, betrayal, victimization and conspiracy. Each of the characters in the text are subject to situations leading them to face the different roles of authority, and each time we view how the various characters beliefs and values affect their relationship with authority. We learn how the individual is often powerless against authority, especially in the case of the children that are killed on the bus. We also learn though, how sometimes the individual does have power over authority as in the case of Kate and Miro.

Power is a very important issue that is discussed at length throughout the course of the text. It is explored through a number of characters through the situations they are confronted with.
