Affirmative Action: Inciting or Easing Internal Divisions
For years, affirmative action has been a pressing issue in our changing nation. Should people of a minority race or gender be given special preference for the sake of diversity? A particularly imperative sector of affirmative action includes racial preferences in college admission, and the Supreme Court is set to review the case brought against the University of Michigan. Their precedent-setting decision will undoubtedly change the way the country deals with affirmative action forever.
Affirmative action was formed to promote diversity and correct patterns of past discrimination. It was also made to correct educational barriers that specific races face in their academic pursuits (Hawkins www). Often times, inner city schools (which mainly educate minorities) have unbalanced income tax funding when compared to the richer and less diverse suburban schools.
