ADHD and Ritalin

ADHD And Ritalin
“Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), disorder beginning in childhood, characterized by a persistent inability to sit still, focus attention on specific tasks, and control impulses”(Woods, Encarta 2001). ADHD is the most common childhood mental illness in the United States. It affects “3 to 5 percent of school-age children” (Woods, Encarta 2001). The treatment, of one of the biggest problems that hinder not only parents and teachers, but also the children that have and the children that are being taught around those that show symptoms of the disorder, is methylphenidate or more commonly known as Ritalin. Even though medication is used to treat most cases, about ninety percent is successful, there needs to be a more active approach to aiding these children without giving them such a powerful drug. This drug, even though proven to not be harmful to children, is argued to be habit forming in the adolescent years.
